Best paper for business cards

Last updated 2026-08-22

In short

For most business cards, 350–400 GSM coated art board is the best paper: it takes lamination and spot UV cleanly, prints accurate colour, and costs least. Choose 600 GSM cotton for a premium tactile card, kraft for a natural look, and PVC where the card must be waterproof.

Coated art board

The default. Smooth surface, accurate colour, works with matt, gloss and soft-touch lamination and every special finish. 350 GSM standard, 400 GSM for a firmer card.

Uncoated and cotton

Uncoated stock feels natural and takes letterpress and embossing beautifully, but colours print about 10–15% duller because the ink sinks in. Cotton stock at 600 GSM is the classic luxury card.

Kraft, PVC and metal

Kraft suits organic and artisan brands but limits colour to what reads on brown. PVC is waterproof and used for membership cards. Metal cards are a statement item with a 7–10 day lead time.

Frequently asked questions

Is 300 GSM enough for business cards?

It prints fine but feels thin in hand. 350 GSM is the practical minimum for a professional card.

Which paper is best for foil stamping?

Uncoated or soft-touch laminated stock at 400 GSM or heavier — foil sits crisply and the contrast is strongest.
